How we do the work

Search is full of accepted wisdom that doesn't hold up. Here's what we've learned.

Volume is not growth

More pages, more posts, more content. It sounds like progress, but volume without strategy creates noise. It leads to indexation problems, cannibalization, and wasted resources.

AI search does not replace fundamentals

AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity. They're changing how people find information, but they don't change what makes content valuable.

Doing everything at once does not work

Search isn't about doing everything at once. It's about knowing which lever to pull and when. Early on, technical fixes might unlock more value than new content. Later, authority building might be the bottleneck.

Reactivity is not a strategy

Algorithm updates, technical fixes, reporting cycles, and task management. The default model of search keeps marketers in a constant state of reaction. Staying on top of everything becomes the job, and strategy suffers as a result.

Throwing AI at problems does not work

Great search work can now be completed by agents. That part is real. But applying AI well requires nuance that most companies skip. It requires understanding what great looks like before agents start, recognizing how agents interpret tasks differently from humans, and continually iterating until the output meets the standard.
